Washing Socks 洗襪子
Child： Mom， my feet stink。
寶寶：媽媽，我的腳好臭啊。
Mom： It‘s probably your dirty socks， not your feet， that stink。
媽媽：可能是你的髒襪子臭，不是腳臭。
Why don’t you put on a pair of clean ones？
你換一雙乾淨的吧。
Child： I don‘t have any clean socks。
寶寶：我沒有乾淨襪子了。
Mom： I think you’re old enough
媽媽：我覺得你已經足夠大了，
to learn how to clean your own socks。
可以學學怎麼自己洗襪子了。
Child： Okay， I can do it。
寶寶：好的，我可以的。
Mom： Alright， go get all of your dirty socks
好的，把你的髒襪子都找到，
and meet me in the bathroom。
然後到洗手間來找我。
I‘ll teach you how to wash them by hand。
我教你怎麼手洗襪子。
In the bathroom 在洗手間
Child： Here are all my dirty socks。
寶寶：這些是我所有的髒襪子。
Mom： Good。
媽媽：好的。
First， we’re gonna fill this basin with warm water。
首先，我們往盆裡接點溫水。
提到basin，英國人大多首先想到洗手池，但也認同洗手池叫sink，會管塑膠臉盆叫plastic bowl。提到basin，美國人大多首先想到塑膠臉盆。
人們也會用plugged sink-塞上塞子的洗手池洗襪子。
Then put your socks in the water。
然後把你的襪子放到水裡。
Submerge them for a few seconds to make sure they get wet。
把它們浸到水中呆幾秒，弄溼。
Child： Now what？
寶寶：現在呢？
Mom： Take the bar of laundry soap
媽媽：拿起這塊肥皂，
and dip it in the water
在水裡蘸一蘸，
to get it a little wet。
讓它稍微有點溼。
Child： OK， what‘s next？
寶寶：好的，然後呢？
Mom： We scrub the heel and toe areas of the sock。
媽媽：咱們搓一搓襪子後跟兒和腳趾頭那兒。
Child： Why those areas？
寶寶：為什麼是這些地方啊？
Mom： They’re the dirtiest。
媽媽：這些地方是最髒的。
They touch the floor the most。
它們沾地最多。
Child： You‘re right。
寶寶：你說得對。
Mom： So we need to rub the soap over the heel area。
媽媽：所以我們需要在後跟那兒打點肥皂。
Count slowly to 5 while you rub。
搓的時候慢慢數5下。
Child： All done。
寶寶：好了。
Mom： Now rub the toe area
媽媽：然後搓搓腳趾頭那兒，
and count slowly to 5 again。
也慢慢數到5。
Child： OK。
寶寶：好的。
What’s next？
然後呢？
Mom： We let the socks soak in the water for a few minutes。
媽媽：咱們把襪子在水裡泡幾分鐘。
Child： I think it‘s been a few minutes。
寶寶：我覺得已經有幾分鐘了。
It’s 是it has的縮寫。
Mom： OK。
媽媽：好的。
Take the socks out of the basin
把襪子從盆裡拿出來，
and squeeze as much water out of them as you can。
然後把水儘量都擰出來。
Squeeze和後面提到的wring在洗衣服場景可以互換。
Child： OK。
寶寶：好的。
Mom： I‘ll pour the soapy water out，
媽媽：我把肥皂水倒了，
and then refill it with clean water。
然後再接上清水。
Child： What’s the clean water for？
寶寶：清水是幹什麼用的？
Mom： We‘ll use it to rinse the soap out of the socks。
媽媽：我們用它來投襪子。
Now put the socks back in the water。
現在把襪子放回水裡。
Move them around a little
在水裡稍微動一動，
to get the water through them。
讓它們過一遍水。
Child： Are we almost done？
寶寶：好了嗎？
Mom： Almost。
媽媽：差不多了。
The last step is gently wringing all of the water out of them，
最後一步是輕輕把水擰乾，
and then hanging them on a clothesline， hanger or drying rack to dry。
然後把它們掛到晾衣繩、衣架或者晾衣架上晾乾。
Child： Will do！
寶寶：好的！
