第二章標題：悄悄消失的玻璃。

2、Nearly ten years had passed since the Dursleys had woken up to find their nephew on the front step, but Privet Drive had hardly changed at all.

自從Dursleys夫婦醒後在大門口臺階上發現他們的外甥後，（縱然）過去了快十年，但是女貞路街區幾乎一點都沒變。

哈利被放在Dursleyes家門口後過去了快十年，不說別的，這花園裡的花草枯榮不知多少回，樹木想必也更高更茂盛，鄰居不會來個新的，家裡裝修不會變變？但是羅琳用的卻是hardly changed at all，還用at all著重強調。到底怎麼個不變法？

3、The sun rose on the same tidy front gardens and lit up the brass number four on the Dursleys’ front door; it crept into their living room, which was almost exactly the same as it had been on the night when Mr. Dursley had seen that fateful news report about the owls.

太陽照常（緩緩）升起，（陽光照到）總是齊整的草坪上，也照得德思禮家大門上 “四號”銅門牌閃閃發亮；陽光又悄悄地爬進他們家的客廳，這裡和德思禮那晚看到關於貓頭鷹的重大新聞時（的樣子）一模一樣。

the same 相同，羅琳想強調的是

一成不變

，太陽照常升起，花園一直都是整潔的模樣，十年如一日。不明白這點，翻譯成“

太陽照舊升到整潔的前花園上空”，

這意味就譯不出來。

lit up ，light up，

照亮； 發亮

it crept into their living room，crept這裡是悄悄地緩慢行進/爬，第一章也出現，Mr。 Dursley crept to the bedroom window，其意則是

躡手躡腳地移動（走過去）。

Which……when……，先是說明living room，再補充說明the night，長從句，換成中文表達，從德思禮看到貓頭鷹新聞那晚以後，過了快十年，客廳也還是老樣子。如果，寫成Nearly ten years had passed，客廳依舊是almost exactly the same不是更好？簡潔明瞭。除非作者是不想重複，但是又要找到一個時間支點。

4、Only the photographs on the mantelpiece really showed how much time had passed.

只有壁爐臺上的照片顯示出流逝了多少時光。

Mantelpiece 西方住的是house，有壁爐，在其上有個小臺，小臺及牆壁放置著家庭照片，加上壁爐是溫暖的，在西方家庭中有著重要的象徵意義——展示家庭之溫馨所在，成為客廳中重要的佈置之處。

5、Ten years ago, there had been lots of pictures of what looked like a large pink beach ball wearing different-colored bonnets——

中版譯文是：【十年前，這裡擺放著許多照片，看上去像戴著五顏六色嬰兒帽的一隻粉紅色的大海灘氣球】。

這翻譯半天也沒看明白，看英文也不明白，聽人分析才曉得，聯絡下文照片換成了達力長大後的照片，原句實際大意是：十年前，（這裡）有很多達力小時候的照片，在baby時達力看著就像個帶著嬰兒帽的大沙灘球。

中文版翻譯缺少了主語不說，還把a large pink beach ball翻譯成粉色的

大海灘氣球

，怎麼就變成能飛的氣球了？beach ball，這是沙灘球啊。難道說，譯者是理解成，那擺放、佈置照片的樣子，看起來就像個氣球？

羅琳這是用beach ball形容達力嬰兒時賊胖賊胖的，嗯，還有點搞笑，帶著bonnets（嬰兒帽）的沙灘球。

6、but Dudley Dursley was no longer a baby, and now the photographs showed a large blond boy riding his first bicycle, on a carousel at the fair, playing a computer game with his father, being hugged and kissed by his mother.

達力不再是一個嬰兒，現在照片上是一個大塊的金髮男孩，（有他）騎著第一輛腳踏車、在露天遊樂場騎旋轉木馬、和老爸玩電腦遊戲、被老媽擁著親吻（的照片）。

中版譯文把a large blond boy說成是【

一個大頭男孩】，

blond是【金髮的】，blond boy金髮男孩呀，咋blond就變成頭了？

還有把on a carousel at the fair譯成【

在博覽會上乘坐旋轉木馬】，

fair是有展銷會，但展銷會沒有放旋轉木馬嗎？那是商品交易會的。明明fair有【

露天遊樂場】之義，這個多恰當。

7、The room held no sign at all that another boy lived in the house, too. Yet Harry Potter was still there, asleep at the moment, but not for long.

這房子沒有任何跡象（透露）出裡面還住著另外一個男孩。但是哈利·波特確確實實住在那兒的。他此刻正在睡覺，但是睡不了多久了。

that+從句，同位語從句，修飾Sign。

held no sign at all，一點跡象也沒有，held sign存在/有跡象。

感受

羅琳從第二章一開始，從日常、花園、銅牌（住址）、客廳的描寫著重強調女貞路和德思禮一家的不變，真的有變，值得德思禮關注的，也就只有他們孩子達力的成長，使得他們願意給家裡增添些新變化。極度保守、把孩子當寶貝的父母躍然紙上。

Harry被德思禮家收養了快十年，屋裡居然沒有一樣他的東西，與達力的受寵有著天壤之別，Harry如此的毫無存在感，德思禮一家也是刻薄到一種境界了。

這樣的家庭下，Harry極度缺乏著關愛，他會如何與德思禮家相處，又會長成什麼樣？
