will的否定形式為什麼是won't，而不是willn't？

英語裡的縮略形式大多很直截了當

，比如：

they are的縮略形式they‘re

he would的縮略形式he’d

she is的縮略形式she‘s

is not的縮略形式isn’t

could的縮略形式couldn‘t

等等

但是，也有一些讓人感覺奇怪的縮略形式，如shall not是shan’t、are not是aren‘t，但也可以說ain’t。

尤其是

will not為什麼不是willn't，而是won't？為什麼把will變成wo？

對此《韋氏詞典》的解釋是，

won't並不是現代的will not縮略而成，而是古英語裡wonnot的縮略形式，而wonnot則是由“will not”的變體“woll（或wol）”構成的。

（“Won‘t was shortened from early wonnot， which in turn was formed from woll （or wol）， a variant form of will， and not。”）

表示

will的形式在不同時期，不同地區有不同的拼法

，如wyllan， wulle， wole， wool， welle， wel， wile， wyll， and even ull， and ool等，

最終統一為will

。

而

will的否定的縮略形式反而不多

，從16世紀開始，基本就一些幾個了：wonnot（woll not的縮略）以及winnot，wunnot，和我們想當然以為的willn’t，

但最終勝出的是wonnot，而wonnot則進一步縮略為won't。

實際上，willn‘t在歷史上儘管不常見，但也不是沒人使用的，比如：

夏洛特·勃朗特在《雪莉》中就有這麼一句：“That willn’t wash， Miss”。

伊麗莎白·蓋斯凱爾的《瑪麗·巴頓》中也出現了這樣一句話：“No， indeed I willn‘t tell， come what may。”。
