〔1〕grape /ɡrep/

在古英語中，葡萄本是winberige（wine berry），後來才被來自古法語的grape取代。

n。葡萄；葡萄藤 eg：I want to eat these grapes。我想吃這些葡萄。

〔2〕machine /min/

mach機器+ine名詞字尾機器

n。機器，機械 eg：The machine can be remotely operated and monitored。這臺機器可以遠端操作和監控。

v。用機器加工 eg：All parts are machined from top grade， high tensile aluminium。所有零件都是用頂級高強度鋁加工而成。

來自古法語poudre，粉塵，粉末，粉狀物質

n。粉；火藥 eg：The wood turns to powder in his fingers。木頭在他指間會變成粉末。

v。抹粉 eg：She powdered her face and applied her lipstick and rouge。她往臉上搽了粉，抹了口紅和胭脂。

=low，foundation，表示“低下，基礎”；

基礎，來自希臘語bainein，走，起步，臺階

n。底座 eg：The clock stands on an oval marble base， enclosed by a glass dome。鍾放在橢圓形的大理石基座上，外罩玻璃罩。

vt。以……作基礎 eg：He based his conclusions on the evidence given by the captured prisoners。他根據被俘囚犯提供的證據得出了這個結論

adj。卑鄙的，無恥的 eg：Love has the power to overcome the baser emotions。愛能夠戰勝邪念。

〔5〕mend /mend/

mend-＝free from fault，表示“改錯”；

縮寫自amend，修理。來自拉丁語emendare，修理，糾正錯誤

v。修理，縫補 eg：They took a long time to mend the roof。他們花了很長時間修繕屋頂。

v。 （使）康復；（使）痊癒；（使）癒合 eg：I‘m feeling a good bit better。 The cut aches， but it’s mending。我感覺好多了。傷口很疼，但是正在癒合。

傷口癒合後，就該重歸山林了

〔6〕shepherd /eprd/

shep-羊+herd獸群，使聚集牧羊人

n。牧羊人 eg：The shepherd is herding his sheep on the grassland。牧羊人正在草原上放牧。

v。帶領；引領；護送 eg：She was shepherded by her guards up the rear ramp of the aircraft。她在警衛的護送下上了飛機尾部的舷梯。

〔7〕accent /ksent/

ac-加強+cent-＝sing唱加強吟唱重讀，引申義為地方口音

n。口音，腔調；重音符號 eg：He had developed a slight American accent。他說話帶上了一點輕微的美國口音。
